1999 GL1500

Postby lysy1972 » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:44 am

I am trying to fix staring problem on 1999 gl1500.Starer relay is clicking after star button push and polarity on first relay by battery on thin wires changes .Relay is working if I apply power and ground to terminals while disconnected.I'm trying to purchase this bike but maybe somebody with more knowledge about it can give me a tip before I will get to deep. And bike does not display neutral on dash even is in it.
please advise

Get on the bike, pull up the side stand, pull in the clutch and try to start it.
There are multiple safety switches involved for starting..Neutral switch, side stand switch, clutch lever switch, reverse switch, etc.
I think there are 2 relays involved in the starting. If your gutsy you could verify its in neutral, turn on the key and screwdriver jump the main relay to get the starter to crank the engine to see if it runs.

I did jump starter but not from relay and starter turns.I've tried pulling up kick stand and pressing clutch no result.you can hear relay in lh fuse box clicking but no crank and in the same time is no power to fuel pump neither. If I check thick red wire that goes from starter direct to first relay it has ground then passes first relay and goes to red thick wire that goes to second relay by battery and it still has ground ?
please advise

Yes,the starter can show near ground on the main post. It's measuring the windings. If you jump battery power to it and it cranks the motor over, the starter is not a problem. The schematic is for a 93,I hope it helps. This one uses 3 relays to crank the motor. The fuel pump may not run until the engine is turning over. The pix posted backward.Check the reverse switch and fuses.

thank you for all help after 3hours of tracing wires it is a hidden 5amp fuse that I had to by pass on neg post of first starter relay and it should go to yellow/red wire on lh connector to second relay . and ground was missing from brown wire for first relay so after starter switch was pushed and polarity on yellow/red wire on first relay was changed power supply was not send to second relay to bridge him to pass positive current to starter direct
i anybody will have problem like that just download starter circuit diagram and make sure first relay has ground and second relay has power on yellow/red wire
thanks for all help I'm expecting another gold-wing to be fixed so keep you posted what kind of disaster will I run in to

I have a 1990 gl 1500 with a similar problem. Wont start with button but will start and run if i jump the solenoid. No neutral light, headlight or gages.Radio, horn, blinkers and such still work. I have changed the start solenoid today but didnt help. Any ideas?
