timing belts

Postby twostrokes48 » Thu Aug 04, 2011 12:49 pm

I just picked up a showroom 98 1500A with 26k on it....Original timing belts....figure i better change them just due to age. Anyone know how big a task that is??? how long it should take?? any Gates, belt numbers handy?? This is a replacement bike for my 89 1500 trike that was totaled last month. I had to slowdown for a hwy emergency in progress, the guy behind me in the 05 Chevy 250 didn't think he needed to...hit me doing over 65...Made a mess of the trike...I'll know more about me when I get the results of the MRI's that were done last Friday.

Hello and welcome to the forum.
I changed mine on my 1500, but I used Honda belts. I'll say it took me about 2 hours.
There is a page here that tells you how to change them in the DIY section here's the link viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4170
Smart move changing the belts.
Hope you get good news.

Thanks for the info. I don't do too much of my own work anymore, but may have to start doing more. This 70-90 bucks per hr for labor is a killer.

There is a part interchange at gates .com, Just type in the original part number and the gates replacement will show up. Big difference in price $13 to $ 16 versus $110 a piece. Available at most auto parts stores.

Yes, I aware of the difference in price. Had just replaced them on my 89 a few hundred miles before I totaled it....just can't find the part number for the gates...I have also lost my memory and can't find it. I know I put it somewhere. Thanks for the cross reference site.

Twostrokes go to tech talk at top of this site look for cross over parts it has a lot of cross over parts and numbers. Also if you ask Littlebeaver moved down to your neck of the woods,he also did a how to on belts. Im sure he will need someone to ride with, and keep him out of trouble haha. Just dont let him try any of his crazy ideas good luck. Hal
