Need to change brakes 1995 GL1500SE

Postby faithtalker1 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 7:40 am

Can someone direct me to a good instructional page or a video to explain to me how to put new brakes on this wing. And I have a little shake when I step on the rear brake can rotors be turned at all, Bike has very few miles on it and I assuming it may have sat some so maybe just need buffed up? or Just new pads altogether. Love this site by the way and so far people in it are great too. Thanks for all your help thus far guys.. This is my first wing with newer design as I had a 86 aspencade 6-7 years ago and traded it for a vtx and wish I never had. While I love my vtx Nothing like a WING!

the left side cover, seat, lower trunk trim, and corner on the left bag will have to come off. then thecable to open the left bag will have to be disconnected and the left bag will have to be removed to gain access to the rear caliper

Fun fun, rear Brakes
I would first assess if you need a new disc, I don't think you can turn them. Mine was shot, the previous owner/owners did not check wear as they should have, when I pulled the wheel and caliper is was obvious they had run on metal way to long, even the pistons showed some where,
Here is a video I made removing the rear wheel, which you will have to do,should you have require a new disc, If you don't need a new disc I would check out a less involved method

Good luck, and have fun
Bill

Pretty complicated I see, lol at least I have always been one who could tear things apart and put them back together the same way, I am a contractor and my dad was a mechanic all his life and taught me by letting me do all my own stuff hands on. Thank you for the video it at least will get me headed in the right direction. Your bike is the same Identical color scheme as mine.

Good news disc and rotors are fine just been sitting a while, I do need a new front tire and just a few adjustments then I am on my way for a 2500 mile trip next week. Can't wait to ride like the wind. :)
