Radio stn selector (left thumb switch) won't work.

Postby zipperdog » Wed Sep 07, 2011 10:29 pm

Just bought my first Goldwing, a 1989 and LOVE IT. One issue is changing radio stations. The preset stations are all there but the switch operated by my left thumb won't change the frequency. Can anyone help with this one? I am going to try spraying some stuff to clean the contacts. How do you remove what appears to be a small cover over the switch box? The mute switch works perfectly.

Thanks for your help.

Might try to unplug and reconnect the wire harnesses.

Is there any particular plug that you think might be the problem. The mute switch still works. Thanks for the help. Chris

To replace air filter the radio has to be moved and it's easy to come loose ot plug. Think you can check connection by removing the fork trim .

silicone spray. work the switch as you spray it into the switch.

ya my 89 switch does that. Will usually start working after repeatedly moving up and down a few hundred times....

Tried some electric contact spray (and a couple hundred times flipping it). Nothing yet - will try again tomorrow.

possible you have another problem.... flipping usually works when you haven't used the switch for a while, not if it suddenly stopped working....

Sprayed again - let it dry - flipped a few times again and WONDER OF WONDERS - IT WORKS. Thanks to everyone for the ideas. Problem solved.

JJ:
I'm thinking you probably need to tear the switch itself apart, blow it out clean with some compressed air and use an electronic contacts cleaner on it as well. After reassembly, it'll prolly work just fine....and if it does, seal the switch's case with some silicone.
Keep the rubber side down.

Still working well. I make sure I use it each time I ride so that the contact is used a bunch. So far, so good.

I can't remember the brand name but it was a fast drying electrical spray. The directions said to spray it on, let it dry before energizing.

The spray I used was CRC OD Electronic Cleaner. It comes in a Red and White spray can. Hope it helps.

CRC is good quality stuff. You can get it at any decent hardware store.

You may have to take it apart and clean the connectors. I have a 98 model, I had to take cruise control switch apart and clean it for it to work.

Talk about TIMING! I just bought a 1993 GL1500 SE and cannot get the radio station tuner button to work. I'll try the fix above. Thanks!

I just got a 1990 with the same problem. I'm off to by the CRC stuff myself. Mute works but the channel one does not.

I wonder if this will fix my inoperable buttons on the right. None of the 3 cruise buttons work. When I push in the cruise button no lights appear on the dash and set accel or decel seem to do anything. When I push the on/off button again it comes out really slow, so I'm guessing it's quite gummed up inside and will spray the heck out of that side also.
