Holes in side of trunk box GL1500a 1993

Postby wcurlew » Sun Sep 11, 2011 2:09 pm

I have a 1993 GL1500a that I picked up used. The bike had been outside, so one of the 'transition' owners stripped it and had it re-painted (very nice metallic copper/gold) When I got the bike, it was full of holes due to missing emblems and chrome parts which had been trashed or lost. I've been able to figure out and replace all of them EXCEPT for a pair of holes on each side of the rear trunk box.
The holes are about 1/2 way up the sides and are quite far apart, like around 10 inches or so. They are the same size as the holes that were in the back for the aftermarket trunk handle.
I've looked at pictures of various wings of this vintage on several sites, and have also cruised several aftermarket sites, but can't figure out what used to go in these holes on the sides of the trunk.
Can anybody suggest what might have been bolted on here?
Thanks.
Bill

Some kind of chrome accent. Nothing factory. Check www.windstuff.com or www.chromeworld.com and look at the 1500 accessories. Might find a picture of what was there.

I have a 1993 1500 se and will look at this area when I return home in a couple of days. I have only owned this machine for about two weeks and was wondering how well you like yours. This is the first time that I have ridden a bike of any kind on the road so I have a lot to learn.

I have two other bikes in my stable, a 1981 GL1100I Goldwing Interstate and a Yamaha XS-850S special. I love the 1100, but it's 30 years old and I tow a fairly large camper trailer. I picked up the GL1500a a few weeks ago, and have not yet had a chance to do any serious riding, as I have been working on mechanical issues (like no brakes with the pedal!) I did take it out after repairing the brakes, and I have to say the power and smoothness of the ride are just awsome. I just finished putting the electrics in for the trailer hitch I added earlier today, and hope to take it out this coming weekend if some more of the small parts show up as expected Monday. I will say I was pretty impressed with the availability of parts, and I hope this will be my end-of-life bike. If my other bikes are any indication, I should get another 15-20 years out of this one easily.

TMILAM -

I have looked at those sites already and come up empty.

I do occaisionally see a picture with what looks like smokey plastic pieces on the sides of the trunk, but have never seen them offered as an accessory.

Hi, The holes are from an item that is made or distributed by ShowChrome. There twin tubular accent bars that wrap around the whole trunk . I installed them on a 95 I used to own, There mounted two screws and nuts on each side and after install covered up with four chrome metal covers Via sticky tape. As far as I know There still available. I bought them from Michigan Chrome shop located in Richmond Michigan. They should have a web site. Drag Specialtys is another brand that might have a simular part to cover the holes.

Bill, I called the store where I purchaced the accent bars from and sorry to say there a discontinued item, It,s a shame they were a very nice add on. Possible You might find them used. If not the WingAdm. has a cure to fill in the holes. He said it works very nicely, It,s on a post that I submitted a while back for reattaching the side cover tabs that broke off, It will be in the 1200GL section. The only problem is refinishing the paint. Sorry I could not help You out more. My computer crashed a few years back and I lost all of My pictures of My previous Gl1500 I was dumb for not backing them up. So I can not send You a copy to show You what they looked like Take Care .
