1500 gas cap

Postby HALBUDD » Sun Sep 18, 2011 8:53 pm

I have found a problem with my 96 1500 aspy the gas cap is not allowing air in to the tank. I will put the cap on tight and start to ride and she starts cutting out I can see the fuel filter is being sucked dry and as soon as I open the gas cap bang fuel starts flowing again. I am now soaking the gas cap in seafoam but i do not see any vent hole in it. It also has a red hose coming from gas cap down under the bike. On a calf.model it would go to a canister but it is not a calf. model.and the gas cap only vents out to keep pressure from building up( one way valve). I have read of people drilling a small hole in gas cap I would rather not do that as of yet. Any suggestions or help would be great thanks in advance. Hal

Did you try blowing out the vent line with compressed air?

Seafoam might work, but Seafoam is a solvent that must also support fuel combustion, or else you couldn't run it in your gas tank. You might do better soaking it in a pure solvent, like a carburetor cleaner (carb dip) or something of the sort.

hello, I had the same problem on my 97 wing . It would not let air in to replace the fuel going out. I found that the vent tube was pinched between the frame a nd the motoR. i CORRECTED THE PROBLEM AND NOW IT RUNS GREAT. SEE YA ON THE ROAD

Furnacedoc I did check the red hose that goes to the fuel cap blew air thru it and its ok. Problem is the small tube on the gas cap is a one way will only vent out and does not let any air in. Im not sure if its supposed to allow air to come in seems its just there to vent any build up pressure. I did blow it out with break cleaner . There are 4 holes in the bottom of the cap and the center one that looks to have a small valve in it . On the outer ring outside the rubber seal there looks to be four small holes do you think that these are the vents or what. Thanks Hal

I am not sure about the other holes, but I also soaked my cap in seafoam cleaner overnight before I found the pinched off vent tube. I will look at my service manual again and let you know.
