Electrical help

Postby dzldan » Wed Sep 28, 2011 11:43 am

New to owning a goldwing; I'm driving down the road on apply the brakes and signal indicators in dash come on ghost like, radio shuts off brake lights stop working, and tail lights stay on. Get going down the road and everythings ok. Two weeks later start it up in the lane throw it in reverse and the same thing happens again. Now I start it the reverse dosen't work no brake lights or tail lights on back end ghost signal lights on dash display, head lights, parking lights and signal lights on front work on front.

I checked fuses and none blown, alt still pushin 13 volts.

What's up

First guess would be a bad earth to the rear tail lights, try running a lead from the negative connection on the brake light to the battery negative terminal and see if the strange behavior stops. If it does then try to find the cause of the bad earth, if there is no change then we have to look for another cause.

Thank you Gary, you were right on the button.

Now I have to track down where the neg ground connects to the frame for the lighting on the back and clean and tighten it or reattach it.

I'd be surprised if the lighting on the back uses the frame as the ground - most of the harnesses I've seen include a ground lead (green), and they are tied together within the harness. I don't have a 1500 to go look at, but I'd be looking more at bad connections within the wiring harness rather than searching for a frame ground that's probably not there.

As WingAdmin says, I really doubt Honda uses the frame for an earth on the goldwing (Many parts are rubber mounted and would have poor connections to the frame), I suspect there is an earth lead going from the tail lights to the battery that has corroded/broken.

Sounds like you are very close to having it fixed.

It's fixed, was just a connector for a noise filter under the seat.

Still getting use to it. The bike has a lot of switches and lights, but I love the ride, the storage, and the heat it has coming out the vents on the cold fall mornings here in Ontario Canada.

Thanks for the help :D
