1500 NICER RIDE ???????????

Postby wrightwing » Mon Oct 10, 2011 4:26 pm

I bought a 1200 in jan and have put only 500 miles on it . It has 58000 mi. on it, and is super clean, I don't think the seat is even broken in yet, as my butt starts to fell it after a couple hours. I payed 2800 for it, so I had to buy it ! My question is, did any of you 1500 riders own a 1200 before you bought your 1500, if so, is there a difference in the ride/comfort/handling :?:

Yes I have two 1200s 84 &85 both good bikes,my new to me 96 does ride smoother and has more power.I feel like it is a little lower to the ground because I drag my feet as I did not on my 1200 but I love my 96. Im keeping all three as my son rides my 85 and its always good to have a back up bike in case one is down for repair, hope this answers your question. Hal

do you have a stock or aftermarket seat on your 1200 wing?. i have a markland seat om my 1200 and my buddy slip who also rides a 1200 wing prefers the markland seat over his stocker, says it feels much better

Yes, it has the stock seat, and with only 58000 mi. I wonder if the seat isn't broken in. This thing is hard. I guess my main question is, are the seats on a 1500 stock more comfortable. I looked at corbins on line, but these things are expensive $400. My dilemma is, do I put money into a nice seat, or think about moving up to a 1500.

wrightwing Go to walmart and look in the automotive section next to the steering wheel covers you will find gel pad seat cushions just 20.00 bucks they will fit pretty good on your seat makes it a softer feel. A lot cheaper then a hole new seat . Hal

I have an 84 1200 interstate and the seat is a bit firm but ok,the 1500 seat is a lot more comfy tho',what does make a huge difference to me are the backrests,i wouldn't be without them,They both ride and handle great, the four cylinder engine is very good, the six cylinder engine is a dream very torquey,no need to change down to overtake, but the 1200 does feel more sporty,my 1500 also feels a little closer to the ground, handles better, and is easier to put on the centrestand ??.My dilemma is which one to take out as i like them both....but the bigger of the two usually wins...... :D

i use the walmart gelpad on my markland seat and it feels better with it than without it. i also have a drivers backrest and highway boards. my 1500 wing had a saddleman seat with driver backrest an m/c gelpad. my 1200 has progressive shocks and springs, my 1500 has the factory suspension front and rear.

My dad rides a '94 gl1500, and I ride a '86 gl1200. Personally, I prefer the 1200 over his 1500 any day. His bike just feels too big, and even the seat feels too big for me. That's saying something, seeing as how I'm 6'5"... It's all a matter of preference. Some people like the 1500, others like the 1200s. Find one and just give it a try and go from there.

i agree, try a 1500 wing and see if you like or think need to have one. i ride my 1500 wing more because i feel less cramped on it, overall the ergos fit me better, and i love the extra power

Agreed the seat is big and at under 5' 8" was the largest obstacle to deal with. Power is there an at 10mph will overcome the weight of bike so it is not an issue. Balance is great and little effort is needed to manouver once moving. Being a bigger bike caution must be taken when parking, and it can blow over.

when i first got my 1500 wing i never thought about the size as compaired to my 1200 wing i got on the 1500 wing and rode it the same as i would my 1200 wing. when i was still a teen riding a 200 pound 125 enduro i purchased my first street bike. it weighed just over 400lbs. it was big, heavy, and long. needless to say other than the power i didn't like it much but a friend said " stop thinking about the size of it and ride it like you ride the enduro " so i did as best i could and i really did like the old norton 750. so going from the 1200 to the 1500 well its just another bike

I have an '85 Interstate and a '95 Interstate and here are my observations:

Slow-speed handling - the GL1200 has the GL1500 beat hands down.

Canyon-carving - the difference between the two is closer, with a slight edge going to GL1200.

Super-slab riding - the GL1500 has a much smoother ride

Power and engine smoothness -the GL1500 easily surpasses the GL1200

With the above being said, I ride the GL1200 more often, but I put more miles per year on the GL1500.
