GL 1500 Thermostat

Post by steve60usa » Tue Oct 25, 2011 7:45 pm

I just changed the thermostat on my 89 GL 1500 for the third time. I read some information about using the Stant 65868 or several cross reference one of different brands. The problem is all of them have the center hole offset to the 2.050 outside diameter. If you happen to put it in wrong, it could hit the ridge in the waterneck and not seat properly causing a leak. Also I bought several of the gasket "o" rings they say will work. They are all a little on the small side and if not positioned correctly, they will leak also. I contacted Stant and they said to use the 45368 if it's in a box or 65368 if it's a blister pack. Also the Napa 53308 superstat which is made by Stant. It is the same size as OEM and the hole is on center with the outside diameter. I also phurchaced the Honda "O" ring gasket and it fills all the gaps and fits perfectly. It is too big of a job to want to do it twice, or three times. Don't cheap out with the gasket.

Thanks for that info. I have found that almost all o-rings included with aftermarket parts are too thin to seal properly.
