88 gl1500 carb and other questions

Postby virgilmobile » Mon Nov 21, 2011 1:34 pm

New to me,88 gl1500.Set up a number of years.
9 hours to restore the carbs.5 of them on the R & R.
I also found 3 vacuum hoses (gray) with sharp 90* bends on them about to fail.Just a slight poke on the bend and they popped open.So suspect any sharp curved gray hose for a weak spot.
All the straight hoses are OK.
One hose on the carb, one on the left manifold and one under the rubber mat under the carbs.
Last thing I found was the fuel cutoff valve(vacuum operated) has a pinhole in the fuel side and leaks gas.
Can a rebuild kit be had for it or can it simply be bypassed?

K&L made a rebuild kit for the petcock a while back - do a search for the part number 18-4356. I know it's been discontinued, but you might still be able to find it somewhere. I wouldn't want to just bypass it.

I'm going to check all my vacuum elbows during my winter maintenance this year.

Thanks for the info. When I pulled at the gray vacuum hoses with the sharp bend in them, they were very week on the bend.Just a little poke and they broke through.Only on the hoses at the 90* bend.

Here is a link to the only known rebuild kit for the 1500. Better hurry they may be all gone by now.
