coolant leak below y pipe on top of engine

Postby bustedwing » Wed Nov 30, 2011 4:34 pm

I have found a coolant leak below the y pipe on top of the engine. This would be just forward of the carbs and down on the engine. I am not sure which is the best way to get at it, assuming the o rings are bad and possibly the pipes also.Taking the carbs off looks like a mess, any suggestions?

Not quite as bad as it looks, but from the right side once you have removed the inner fairing, and the right fan, you can see the thermostat housing, and get a better view of where the leak is actually coming from. On a 1989, that I had a coolant leak, it was the pipe going to the carb base and the one that has 3 curves in it, and naturally the carbs had to come off to get to it, and actually had to do that before found the pinhole in the hose, not a 30 minute job, but easy enough, just takes time.

Thanx for the insite, will take a better look from the right side. Have a lot of time, winter has come to our area and looks to stay for awhile. I will let you know how much success I had when I get that far.

On my '88 GL1500, it was easiest to attack from the right side also. I had to remove the right side radiator to have enough room to inspect for the leak and found it on the "Y" hose. The hardest part for me was the removal and especially reconnecting the crossover hose that runs between the two radiators. Positioned at the top, inside corners of the radiators, this small diameter hose is only about 3" and runs directly behind the down tube on the frame! Not much room to get at the clamps :(. But overall, it was an easy job, just very time consuming. Good Luck!

Thanx again, and from what you are discribing it sounds exactly like what I have. I'll have to get the y pipe off then the pipe that extends down to the thermostat housing which is where the leak is, but while I have it that far I will change the thermostat. I am afraid not only are the o rings bad but the pipes corroded also.Time will tell.

I had this problem last year, the clamp over the hose had loosened and started leaking, I got to it like the other guys had said above and put a new hose clamp on the hose and all is well.

I don't believe there are hose clamps on it now, but if I can get one over the pipe would that stop my leak?

There should be a hose clamp on it, the oem clamp was a thin thread clamp style and I put a wide clamp on it.

I will have to look closer, I don't recall seeing a clamp on the pipes. In my mind it is two pipes with an "o"ring as a seal , but will know more when I tear into it.
