Goldwing 1500 runs rough at low rpm

Postby tilson » Mon Dec 05, 2011 9:51 am

My 1988 1500 Goldwing Trike runs rough (almost a skip) at low rpm. I can give it about 1/4 choke and it smoothes out. It seems like a vacuum leak but my mechanic can't find it. He rebuilt carbs and found nothing. :?

I'm just now going through all this on mine.So far I've found 5 vacuum lines with sharp 90* bends in them that were about to break due to weakening in the inner liner.
One was on the intake manifold on the left side,3 on the carb itself and one is under the rubber mat under the carb assembly, attached to the manifold.
These hoses can break open or collapse shut.
Not that's your exact problem, but something to keep in mind.
Before you go too far, adding choke to get to idle, indicates it's running lean somewhere.
Without too much difficulty, you might sync the carbs first before you get into an all day project in ripping everything apart.

At what RPM are you talking about. Also, how many miles on the bike. Carburators are fairly simple, but trash in them can occur if the bike isn't run hard to keep the fuel from stagnating. I've had issues with the little holes in the pick up tube becoming clogged. Does it do this after you've been riding a while or all the time? Just some thoughts.

Obviously you've had your hands in one of these before.Don't hold back on us now.
What little holes in what pickup tubes?
Is that the accelerator jets?

The low speed jets are ones that I've had to clean out. Not sure if your bike sits up during the winter. I used a small needle. Might also be the float level. Just some thoughts. Chasing a vacuum leak is a lot of fun, but you are on the right track. Those little tubes do deteriorate. Look especially close at all the turns and any place the hose is clamped or connected to a metal tube.

Dpraying a little carb cleaner around the hoses with the engine running will pick up a vacum leak. Should increase in RPM when the engine sucks the carb cleaner in at the leak

just some thoughts

Mine sat in a garage for 2+ years.Everything was plugged up,fuel leaking from the vacuum cutoff valve, vacuum hoses weak at the 90*,etc,etc.I'm getting there,6 gallons of dark yellow gas flushed out of it 2 days ago.YUCK.

My mechanic did find the problem and it was a vacuum leak, but not from the hoses. The intake manifold was leaking around the boots. Thanks for all who had provided information on possibilities.
