You may want to run a continuity test on the switch the connector is a black 6 pin on the right side cooling fan holder. Check for continuity in each gear position from a good ground to the correct wire.
When in Neutral: between ground and Lt.G/R wire, continuity is present.
When in 2nd: between ground and Blk/Yel, continuity is present.
When in 3rd: between ground and Wht/Red, continuity is present.
When in 4th: between ground and Red/Wht, continuity is present.
When in OD: between ground and Grn/Org, continuity is present.

I'll scan the pages of the service manual with the instructions on how to do the job and submit them here.

thanks again but i think i should check it first as this seems like a big job to replace it if it is not faulty can continuity be checked with 12 volt tester or do i need a special tester

If you have a multimeter with an Ohms setting you can check the switch for continuity, digital works best and with a 'Beep' sound or tone you can confirm the switch has continuity even when you may not be able to see the display.
It's a big job to pull the bike apart and get the switch.
