GL 1500 SE alternator disassembly

Postby mikeyrx » Wed Dec 30, 2009 7:54 pm

pulled the alternator out of my 98 GL 1500 SE, and followed the instructions in the manual ( 96 manual) PLan was to put new brushes in since its 11 years old and 60K miles. Cant get the thing apart. Manual says the connector does NOT have to be removed unless the lower bearings are being serviced, so I did not. Shouldnt keep the thing from coming apart, but it wont. Absolutely wont. No amount of prying on the indicated points will get it apart. Where have I gone wrong ? I have all the nuts off (5 including one on terminal) and the screws on the body (3) and nothing is budging even with prying on the indicated points.
Any suggestions ?

Rest assured, it will come apart. It is just stuck. Once you have the nuts off and the bolts free, you can rap on it with a plastic hammer. Look at the pictures in the service manual, it shows how it come apart. Just hang on to the alternator body and pulley and rap-a-tap-tap. Be patient, take your time. It will eventually give way.

Funny in reading this post as I had the same issue.. would not come apart.. I put it on the seat and walked away only to knock into the seat and have it fall off and hit the floor and come apart...The memories.

Not the technique that I would recomend  but it worked!! As mentioned, just tap it with a plastic faced hammer until it comes apart. It has been stuck together for 20 years, it will take a little while to come apart!!

Had the same issue with my 88 1500 se .. it did come apart ..the biggest problem was installing the new brushes after removing the old ones, with very hot soldering iron ...i eventually got some very strong fishing line made a pull through out of it but be patient and make sure when you re-assemble that all the connections at the top of the altenator ar still solid ..

Ride safe
