Motorcycle wont start because neutral light won't light

Postby emt8845 » Tue Jan 24, 2012 12:05 am

I have a 1996 gl1500 Aspencade. It won't start because the neutral light won't light. Does anyone have an idea how to correct this???

Possibly....First test....Will it crank if you pull in the clutch lever??? This bypasses the neutral switch circuit..

I'll look at the schematic to give you something to check.Be right back.

Here's a generic schematic. If the reverse lever switch is bad,mis-adjusted,or just tripped a bit ,it will kill the electric to the neutral lamp and starter circuit.
This should be the first test point.

First, make sure your kill switch isn't accidentally bumped!

It's a common failure point on 1500's for the reverse lever switch to become out of tolerance, which will cause the bike to not start. Sometimes just jiggling the reverse lever, or pushing it down all the way is all it takes to get the bike to start.

Thank you all for the help. I will try the reverse switch and then I will look at the schematic. I will will let you know what happens.

I had that happen a couple years ago, Mine was the the reverse switch, I had to take it apart and clean/lube it!! (not fun but not that bad) Worked great ever since
I’d rather be Riding my Motorcycle thinking about God
Than sitting in church thinking about my Motorcycle

Hi all,

Just to add to the conversation, I had the same problem all last year. By applying some contact cleaner to the switch, it helped temporarily, but ultimately the switch needed to be replaced. You can get to the switch by removing the Reverse gear handle and reaching just behind the side of the bike where the reverse gear handle is attached. My bike is a ’96, so the fact that this little switch has worn out is not would not be unexpected. Replace it as it is not that an expensive procedure.

Thanks for the info. I tried playing with the switch like the person above mentioned but to no avail. What I dont understand is I rode the bike one day. Parked it in the garage and the neutral light was on, I didn't use the bike all that week so I went to start it and the light was off and the bike wouldnt start.

Hey there,

That switch is probably busted. Get it replaced and you should see the problem go away.

Are you trying to start it with the kickstand down? If so then retract it and then try it. I had mine not let me start it when it was in gear with or without the kickstand down and it tuned out to be the switch on the clutch lever. It sounds like a dirty switch someplace to me....

Well the only thing now is to pop the covers and get hands on.I can't possibly explain why it worked and then suddenly failed 12 hours later.A close inspection to locate the problem may reveal that answer.
Here's the next step,if your willing to try ...Yes you need to get a few tools out and wrench on it a bit.
Get to the switch and use a test probe or volt meter , check for volts as shown OR ohm test the switch.
I prefer the test probe. It actually checks the switch while operating .

Similar problem, 1992 Goldwing, tried the "reverse" lever to no avail. Charged battery thouroughly and must have moved a wire on the additional fuse box installed by previous owner. Not sure where the loose connection is but bike id working fine.
