using the CB controls on LHB for other purposes

Post by brurxw1 » Fri Feb 17, 2012 2:19 pm

Hi,

I have a GW from 2006 with no CB installed.
I would use the CB controls on the left handlebar for other purposes (I have no CB and these buttons come in handy),on the only plan that I can find see below, the colors of the cables comming out y
the left handlebar are not the same . In the diagram I see that there is a link between the common of the CB-filled switch and volume switch on the CB radio ditto-switch and tune SQL switch.can I use diodes to protect my radio, I would not like to blow up my radio

Thanks

Rudi

Sorry for my bad English, I'm living in Belgium Europe

The common for the switches is driven, and is part of a matrix scan under the audio-units control, you can not use them directly and still be wired into the bike, the rattlebars approach (originally pioneered by Fred Harmon) is to remove the factory switches or wiring and replace them with your own. However, the GL2way w/o the CB (drops the price, only purchase the interface unit) can be attached plug-n-play to the CB connector, leaving the original switches in for resale and brings out some of the switches individually. Volume switches remains under control of the GL2way, and the unit can be used to bring in three individual interrupt-audio sources like a GPS and bluetooth adapter and the volume can be entirely functional with each. The Squelch and Channel switches up, and down, come out as four 'electronic' 1mA 'contacts' with a 25ms pulse duration. The PTT is available as a 1A contact (on the main transceiver control) or a 5mA (1.8Kohm) contact (on the secondary transceiver control). You will need to contact Pete at GL2way if you want it optioned differently, or for a specific application, he is highly responsive.

CB electrical system is in GL mass-produced in the U.S., you would have to put a turret on the left side of the steering wheel, make a bundle of electrical CB, do not know if you have a switch on the console, CB radio, to the same radio, not worth it to have fun, too much work and cost is not known whether all together will work better with the time change this bike already with the installation of a radio or CB!

Hi Rudi,
I've got an 2008 GL1800 USA espec. and I use the CB controls to turn on/off the daytime running lights, low beams, and garage opener. The PTT switch is used to flash high beams.
I made an circuit based in a microcontroller wich basically "hijacks" the signals in the system control matrix and detects when is pressed CB VOL, CB CH, CB SQL and PTT.
With this information the circuit drives three optocouplers-relays and several MOS transistors who perform all tasks.
If you has knowings in electronics I can post the eschematics, firmware, etc.

You see, my English is not as good as it should. I live in Spain.
Regards,
Eduardo

I would also be interested in seeing what was done to use the switches. Please post some more info.

Hello,
Here I attach the schemes and some photos.
To understand the device it is essential that you have the "Electrical Troubleshooting Manual" of the GL1800.
With the manual in sight you can know how and where the modifications have been made in the circuit to be able to insert my device.

In order to insert the files in the message I had to trick the system: Change all .log extensions to .pdf
Greetings.
