Tire change and bolt replacement?

Postby rabbott5 » Thu Mar 01, 2012 10:14 pm

Ok, so I just did my first tire change on my 1800. My riding buddy and I split on a Harbor Freight tire changer a while back. Between the two of us, we have to do at least one tire change a year. Last year we did three sets between the two of us. The changer has paid for itself. Any way, back to the question. I did the rear tire first, thinking it would be the more difficult. Not to bad. I change the front and as I go to remount the wheel, I read in the service manual that I should install new bolts on the caliper that has the pivot (linked brakes). Really? Over kill or do you guys really change the bolt?

If you took your bike to a dealer they certainly wouldn't change anything but the tyre. If anything looks worn or odd in some way then I changeif, if not leave alone.

I think the manual says to replace the bolt because the new bolt will come with thread locker on it already. Its their way of avoiding liability. Just put some locktite on it.

Thank you, that makes sense.

Just be sure to use blue loctite, not red... Red is the type for bolts you don't want to take off again. It usually requires heat to remove. I use the blue stuff everytime I replace brakes on cars.

Yep, I keep the blue in the toolbox. Thanks again.
