03 1800 Head Bearing Loose?!

Postby utgoulds » Tue Apr 03, 2012 8:49 pm

Started noticing a slight "wobble" at low speeds (below 20mph) as I'm slowing in traffic, for lights, etc. It feels like a head bearing...I've had the same thing/feel on other bikes I've owned in the past. Does anyone know if it's possible to tighten a head bearing "at home"? Appreciate any help you can provide.

Overtorque'ing the head bearings on Goldwings happens way too often. If you have movement in the steering head with the bearings adjusted properly (and yes, if you are mechanically able, you can do this at home) the bearings are probably bad. They have things like All Balls bearing kits to help with this. The Goldwing, being such a large heavy motorcycle has head bearing problems.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

How many miles do you have on your tires?
Many times the wobble is caused by tires, either cupping of the tires, defect in the tires (tread separation) or out of balance tires.
I stopped almost all the wobble by installing "Centramatic Balancers". Not only did it take away the wobble but it give me much more tire wear. It actually smoothed out the cupping the more I rode.
My 2009 had almost 20K on the original tires, and I installed the centramatic's at 6600 miles. The tires still had a couple of thousand miles left on them when I changed them but I was at Wing Ding, the price was good and I was on a 3700 mile trip. If I would have been around home, I would not have changed them until they were completely worn out.

You also could have problems with the head bearings. Many have gone to the "All Balls" bearings or installed the "Super Brace" to solve that problem. Unless you are experienced at working on Goldwing's, I would have a mechanic that has the experience with changing head bearings do the job.

and here I will say one thing, replace the bulb bearing roller superbrace in 1.8 I think is unnecessary, it is not the GL 1500 model, I suggest you turn right after replacing the bearings and the bike will be great to ride!
I personally have loaded AK-20 and is O.K.

Well, I'm pretty sure I figured out "most" of the problem. On the way to work Monday (with the wife on board) and blew out the back tire at 75 on the interstate. Fortunately, I sorta felt it coming and was slowing down as the tire went. Was able to to get stopped with no problems. Destroyed that Dunlop E3...split it damn near up the middle. Now that I got new rubber on I should be able to get it into the dealer to check the head bearing...just in case.

I understand that you rolled off the rear tire in the middle of you, this is not the cause backlash front suspension, check the pressure!
To check the clearance straight on the head?
you put on the foot motor home
get on your moto
moto lean to the front wheel struck the floor
alone or with a friend listening to, plus you can put your hand bottom shelf and the head frame
If you hear a rattle or a palpable need to tighten the slack-
This is a preliminary test, but effective!
