HID Lights on 1800 Goldwing

Postby thrasherg » Thu Apr 12, 2012 11:16 am

So I ran a search on this and found 2 posts, but not a lot of information. Has anyone fitted HID bulbs to their 1800 wing that gave more light, allowed a better view of the road ahead and did not cause loads of electrical interference? If Yes, what was the make of the unit, where do you mount the ballasts, did you just replace the Low beam or both high and low?

I would really like to upgrade my wings headlights for night time riding and think HID is the way to go, however many posts say that standard halogen shaped reflectors do not work well with HID bulbs, so before I spend some money, I thought I would ask here first..

Anyone made the conversion and happy with it, or should I use the money to invest in some driving lights to add to the wing?

All comments/suggestions welcome.

Gary

When I was at Wing Ding last year in Knoxville, there was a company selling conversions to HID. They would install the low beam conversion for free, but as the high beam requires lots of work, they would not do that one at the show. I would think they will be at Wing Ding 34 in Fort Wayne Indiana, but I don't guess that is close enough for you to drop by. Sorry, but I do not know the company. They said that their conversion would not overdraw, nor would it overheat. If you have any buddies going to 34, perhaps they could be on the lookout for you. If they would install low beams for free, it must not be too difficult.

Many thanks, you don't have any idea what the company's name was?

A year ago I installed DDM tuning HIDs on my wing. If you Google DDM tuning for gl1800riders.com you'll find a lot of posts on the subject. I'm very happy with the outcome of the lighting . For the lights I purchased the 5000 35 watt white lights instead of the 4300's. For a little less than $50.00 with a lifetime warranty I think I did alright. The cutoff on the beam in the headlights lower position seems to be alright measuring against the trunkline of the cars in front of me. Ive been flashed once during the day by a truck with one headlight-go figure. At night they make a big difference on the road. Its a whiter light and it seems to help you see further down the road. Street signs will now jump out at you. I wouldnt want high beams with HIDs just because they take a few seconds to come up to full brightness. The funny part is when you put on your high beams you'll find they're not as bright as your low beams with the HIDs. Looking at the Goldwing HIDs and at DDM tuning and the HIDs they sell on Ebay except for some minor differences they look to be basically all of the same type of manufacture. Now if I had an AUDI or BMW that would be a different story.

I too was considering an HID "upgrade". I like to do my research before jumping in and after doing so decided it was both not the right thing to do and illegal.

There are many web sites by reputable lighting suppliers and manufacturers explaining the reasons for it. Although it would help their sales they do not manufacture Halogen to HID conversion kits. I have not come across any HID conversion kit made by a reputable manufacturer like Piaa, Bosch, Philips etc. Most of these kits are coming out of Asia, sold online by someone who is here today and gone tomorrow.

Unfortunately law enforcement has too many other things to do to worry about lights.

Gary,
Maybe you might want to subscribe to a GL1800-only forum where you'll find TONS of stuff about HID's and the legal mumbo-jumbo that goes along with the subject. www.gl1800riders.com
(sorry if this reference to another forum is "out of place", but I'm just trying to help.)

The only real policy I have on content here is make sure it's civil and legal. People here are so nice I haven't really had to come up with rules to deal with problems. Post away! :)

I have no comment on the HID bulbs but, thought that I would offer a YouTube video dealing with replacing the low beam bulbs.
This is my first attempt at a YouTube video.
I have come up with a little different technique realizing that there is not a lot of room to get at the bulb through the folk tunnel.
Go to YouTube and search for: GL1800 Headlight replacement.mov

Many thanks, I ended up buying a set of 4 bulbs that are rated 65watts and put out 2100 lumens instead of 1400 lumens of the standard bulbs. It took me almost 2 hours to change the 4 bulbs, think I will hire an octopus the next time!! What a hassle, I hope the new bulbs will justify the effort.

I would not have installed aftermarket HID kit as to the wiring hassle and the quality not to mention the precision of the beam spread and angle as well. Although there are special HID available with coating on it to fit on reflector type of headlight fittings, I managed to get the Japanese version of goldwing headlight designed for the HID type D2R with the space for the ballasts originally made by Mistubishi and used on many Acura motors though.

Tried many brands and the only one that produced the best results of them all was the Osram with 20% more light and 5000K color. In the attached picture you could notice the beam cut as to the effect of the bulb and the type of the headlight socket.

Pictures are below...

I didn't know that the Japanese version of the folding was any different from the USA version!! So how did you get the reflectors? I suspect it was not cheap!! I have not yet driven my wing at night so still have no idea if the new bulbs have made any difference..
