Finally Did It; I Bought A Blue 2012

Postby Mike 545 » Fri Apr 27, 2012 6:36 pm

I drove the Blue Wing home today. It felt very different than my 95 1500: balance, brakes, acceleration, and the stereo is excellent. I had a heel/toe shifter on the 1500; and I had some minor issues shifting the new Wing - not a big deal. Also, I think there was less wind in the cockpit on my 1500. There were a lot of wind gusts today, and the new bike was less effected than the 95 1500; the wind used to mull that sucker around. I only put 24 miles on the blue one today; I'll take it out tomorrow and get used to the 1800's personality.

Did anyone else think the 2012 felt more different than you expected?

Don't know about the 2012 1800 but the previous ones do have a different feel to the 1500.
I also found a difference when I changed from a 2001 to a 2007 (with airbag) model. Once you get used to it you begin to wonder if there was really a difference or it was just your imagination playing with you.
No doubt in a couple of weeks you will wonder also.

I triked both of my Gold Wings after about 900 miles. I had a 2007 & now have a 2012 and they were somewhat different in handling. I do feel that the 2012 suspension, seat and forks are better than the 2007. A friend has a 2007 and had to put a brace on the forks to improve handling. He did ride my 2012 prior to me triking the bike and he had made the same comment that the handling was improved in the 2012. The one thing I do not like is the control panel for the CB, radio etc has been relocated by the left knee. Very hard to read and I believe I takes your eyes off the road for far toooo long!

Just curious as to if you looked at any other bikes before decididng on another Goldwing.

Have a friend who after 45 years of riding Honda's replaced his Goldwing with a Victory Cross Country.
"It´s a friggen motorcycle, it´s not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you s**t your pants every now and then. "

Yes I did want to look at the Victory Vision. I was all set to take it for a test ride but my wife was not excited about the look. I have read and looked at some videos of them and really liked what Victory is doing. BMW has some good features as well but think they are more sport touring. Thought about looking at Kawasaki, Suzuki and Yamaha but co-rider really liked her previous Gold Wing so had to keep the co-rider happy. If we have an opportunity to purchase another bike I will take the time to test some other bikes before I purchase again. I still like the Vision and will probably keep that bike in mind as a very close contender.

I spent a lot of time looking at the BMW K1600 GTL. It is very different from the Goldwing, and the BMW GTL is a lot lighter. But ... the GTL has quality control issues; I found myself with an extreme lack of confidence in that bike. I don't like having to push a bike home.

So, I went for the 2012 Wing. I like the new Wing; it handles well; you can't ultra-lean into a turn, but it is stable. My major complaint is that it feels a lot heavier than my 1995 1500 Wing, and I am not getting any younger. I am not in the process of planning a few long rides.

congrats on your new ride. I also got the blue wing and found the more I ride it the more comfortable I get. Looked at the vision and BMW 1600 before getting the wing. They all had something I liked, but overall for my age and desire to keep the passenger happy on long trips the goldwing beat them out. Great stereo, less wind buffering, handles very well. The only problem I have is foot pegs feel as though foot location is slightly pushed back while riding and seat height (short inseam) something I've had to deal with before. If only Honda would listen to these issues and work on it, but for now I think it was the best choice. enjoy :D

It is getting better and better, all the time. Gotta' plan a trip. I know where "A" is - it is my garage. Now "B", the destination, is where I am a little vague. I'll come up with something.

Well, for your sake, I hope "B" is also in your garage. It is the in between that you should make fun, as my signature says,

It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey
