GL1800 heated seat on GL1800 (without heat option)

Post by scottybye » Tue Feb 02, 2010 10:06 am

I purchased a heated seat from a GL1800
My ride is also a GL1800
Difference is 2002 and my bike does not have the wiring (plug and play) that is required for this...
The heated seat came to me with the Plug on the seat side cut off and what I am left with is a bunch of wires, and no idea where they go....or how....

Any help is greatly appreciated

If your bike isn't fitted for heated seats, you may be better off having the stock elements taken out and refitted with aftermarket pieces:

I've heard good things about these people...of course you'll need an upholsterer to pull the covering off and install these, but I understand this can be done very cheaply.

For what its worth, its my understanding that the 2002 would never have had heated seats anyway; that option didn't come on the wing as a factory piece until the 2006 model year I think.

I looked at my 08 bike on Saturday, and found that the harnesses for the heated seat are not present on bikes that didnt come with the comfort package anyway...so even if your bike was new enough, it wouldnt have the plugs.

If you are unhappy with the feel of your seat as well, you may do well to look at an aftermarket seat that already has heaters in it too...tested one out recently and liked it, and it would easily go on my bike.

I have a heated Corbin that I installed on my '01 almost as soon as I bought it. It's not that difficult and you don't have to rewire the bike. There should be two wires coming from the seat(maybe two sets of two if there's switches for the rider and one for the co-rider). Mine are green for the positive and greeen with a black stripe for the negative. The power for the seat should come from acc terminal on the battery( it'll only be on when the key is on).An in-line fuse is allways a good idea

Hey Todd, I see you found the site.

With reference to the power for the seat, does the ACC connection on the GL1800 have the current to power the seat? I am not familiar with the power distribution on the GL1800 and that is why I ask. Seems to me that you once told me it was a 15 amp circuit.

Anyway, if I were to do this on a GL1500, I'd tap off the ACC connection for control power to a relay that would deliver power to the seat from the DC buss (battery). The relay then would be energized either by a a switch or just powered on when the ignition was switched on. The Corbin has individual heater controls right? Does the Honda seat have a similar set up?

no, the honda seat on equipped models actually was part of a series circuit that tied into the heated grips...it is a common problem for people with comfort package bikes to lose their heated grips when they move to an aftermarket seat that doesn't use the factory plug...a few resistors inserted into the seat harness fixes that issue and restores the heated grips to functionality, but that underscores the problem...

The honda heated seat actually interfaces with the ecm of the motorcycle and uses the bike's temperature sensors to decide how cold it is, and won't work if the ambient temp around the bike is too warm.

Stock accessory terminal fuse is 7 or 7.5 amps...you can replace it with a 15. What you're trying to do (retrofit a heated seat to a non comfort bike)...I think its gonna be a hard hack, and I'll be interested in hearing how it works out for you if you get it going...there are a lot of factory heated seats out there, and I'd gladly buy one if I knew I could wire it in.

Good luck.

Scottybye - if you still wish to install a GL1800 heated seat on your '02 bike, let me know - I've just done it, and it's really nice!

would love to hear the answer to this question. I have a 2002 gl 1800 and would like to put heated seats (driver/passenger) on the stock saddle.

Wow this is an old thread...though I do have an update. I did actually do this on my 2008 that didn’t have factory heat. Pins 1/2 and 5/9 are the pins for the front and rear seats respectively. I used two panel mount heat trollers to run them. So If you can source a Honda heated seat on the used market this is a good way to do it.

I have an 02 with 09 seat and an unknown year backrest wired and working fine. Easiest wire up is a commercial heat controller/dual controller, but I built a pair of 12v pulse width modulators for mine. The pins related prior are correct, but note there are components in the seat heaters that require correct polarity so if at first you don't succeed, reverse the pos/neg connection.

I wired one up with 2 SPDT switches for front and rear, direct 12v for high and running through turn signal flashers for low, all through relays of course, worked well.
