Magnetic relay B for 2002 GL1800

Postby TayTay » Thu May 24, 2012 8:41 am

It's baaaaack! I had this problem before. Turn off the key but the engine seems to keep running. I am now aware it is the starter motor that is running. The only way to stop it was by disconnecting the battery. (At least I think that's what it is based on reading some posts)
The service tech where I get bike worked on told me the last time it happened they replaced the magnetic relay B. I try to do the less complex repairs when I can.

If anyone has done this replacement or knows how to do it, I would appreciate any input or guidance.
I have a Mac computer so I am not able to download the manual to see illustrations so I am hoping maybe someone that has the appropriate diagram or instructions will help me.
I'm kind of stranded.
Thanks in advance for any input!

Well,I've never got to poke around a 1800,but this may help at least identify where the solenoid is.

As your mechanic states, I suspect the starter relay (Item 8 in the microfiche) has started arching internally and is welding itself closed, the only cure is to replace the starter relay. It should be easy to change and should not be too expensive, otherwise it could be a short in the wiring, but that is unlikely as it would need to either short Vdd (12 volts) to the active side of the relay (from the ignition/starter button on the handlebars) or a short to ground (Vss) on the clutch/neutral switch side (More likely but still less common than a failed relay), I don't have a wiring diagram to hand so am not to sure how the relay is controlled on the 1800.. My money would be on a failed starter relay.

Virgilmobile, thanks very much for that illustration. I will snap a photo or two and try to post them soon as I can figure out how to.
I also need to figure out how to take off the seat to get to all those parts and then I will attempt to change out that part, thanks to your help with the visual.

Taking off the seat is easy, but putting it back on can be more difficult. To take it off, simply remove the four bolts that hold the seat handles to the bike, move the seat forward to clear the backrest, lift the rear of the seat and slide it to the rear. Voila - it is off. Watch that you do not misplace or lose any of the framerail bumpers. Getting the bolts to line up when you put the seat back on can be a bit of a bear.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Remove the seat, remove the rear fender and unscrew the left chest, 2 starter relays are behind the left trunk with battery

Ghostman,

That link is KILLER! Thank you very much. You guys are all really great to be so willing to help a mechanically challenged guy like myself!
I appreciate all of your inputs.

virgilmobile , Here is a shot of the battery area. Not sure if this is what you wanted but this is what I came up with. Going to attempt to remove the seat and get the Relay out of there this weekend. Have the part on order to replace.

Great step by step except I am stumped on saddle bag removal procedure. :?: :?:
Couldn't find any info on that phase. Got the seat off easy enough though! :)

By looking at the parts diagram,it shows the part your changing is in front of the battery not behind the saddle bag.Ya might poke around in there before you tear too much apart to locate the solenoid.

I don't think so. That's seems to be why they took that left saddlebag loose.

UPDATE
Having removed the saddlebag enough to locate the part, I did and ordered the new one. Replaced it and the engine now starts to turn over, with the ignition key turned off, as soon as I try to connect the battery cables. :?: :!:
Now I'm thinking it may be the Relay A that is the culprit which I thought might be the case (but didn't trust my instincts) since the dealer changed out the relay B last time I had this problem.
Does anyone know the exact functions of the relays A & B respectively?

this is easy! who has back or starter? left trunk must be removed! relays are on the rubber, removed, cleaned and will be OK

WOJCIECH that makes no sense. Please reread what you wrote.
Maybe I wasn not clear. I did find the relays. Replaced the one the dealer thought may be the issue. Relay B. Bike starter STILL starts to turn over as soon as the battery is connected WITHOUT turning ON the ignition KEY.

BIG question now is, are these relays A & B essentially the same? If so I may try to replace the A relay with the new B one I now have.
I am SO BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD!

adalbert1981@o2.pl
and the motor was in the garage and switches? so?
relay B should tap when you turn back, and if not then you need to catch him undress and clean up the main contacts 1

Thanks Ghostman. I think I need to order the Relay A and try the suggestion of replacing them both. I was going to try using the B to replace the A since the B didn't seem to be the problem but I am not sure they are essentially the same type of relay other than the color coding so they get plugged into the right places.
Guess I'm lucky to have the old Harley still running, because at least I can ride something while I am trying to get the Wing back up and running.

The Relay A was the bad one so I was happy to find out that the A is the same as the B except for the color coded plug, which I marked and used. Bike started and when I turned off the key it shut down like it's supposed to. :D
THANKS TO ALL THAT WERE WILLING TO OFFER HELP!
You guys are terrific!
Now if I can get the bike buttoned up! :? While I had things apart I tried to fix and some what successfully, the opening mechanism of that left trunk door. It's working better BUT now the sensor is apparently not working right as the indicator on the dash shows the trunk is not closed all the way. LOL
This is getting to be a real learning experience! If anyone has experience with that sensor I would love to hear about it. I am not sure where it even is. I need to get a good manual for that bike. PERIOD!
HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND WING RIDERS!
