Engine, gas problems

Postby dixieboy4vr » Tue Jun 19, 2012 8:05 pm

I have an '01 with almost 122k on it, now within the last month, off and on, it has gotten really bad gas mileage losing over 100 miles a tank. When I get to highway speeds and above, it chugs and sputters, not really back firing. I have changed the oil and coolant (off schedule) just to make sure there is no sludge built up. Even at Idle it sounds a bit off. I have not had the opportunity yet to check/change the spark plugs. it sounds like there may be a clogged fuel jet or something. I have ran several bottles of injector cleaner and Sta-bil to try and make sure its not bad gas. Any Answers?

Have to agree with Sally and the other posters. This will give you an idea of how well it was maintained regardless of what they told you. I would also change even go as faar as changing the oil.

Going this route will give you a starting point for maintenance and insight as to how well the engine is running. If these look good, I would then go to a gas additive like Sea Foam and let it do its work.

Basically it is a process of elimination.

if changing the air filter does not help, then I would suspect either low pressure on the fuel line (weak/old pump) or failing injectors. Unfortunately both of those problems require specialist equipment to test, so you will probably have to go to a honda dealer.. Start with the easy stuff first. It could also be a defective TPS..

Have you considered replacing the O2 sensor(s)? Not sure if there's 1 or 2.
