Steering Head Taper Roller Bearings

Postby daveb » Sat Feb 20, 2010 7:41 pm

Hi There

I am thinking about changing the standard steering head bearings for taper roller bearings.

1 Has anybody done this mod.
2 What size of bearings were used top and bottom of the stem.
3 Can new standard dust seals be used.
4 How is the pre load set, ie torque figures.
5 Has anybody fabricated their own extraction/insertion tooling.

Any information would be great

Thanks

1 Has anybody done this mod.

Thousands of people have, it is a very common upgrade.

2 What size of bearings were used top and bottom of the stem.

Sorry, don't have the dimensions on hand, but these fit the 1800:

3 Can new standard dust seals be used.

The kit above comes with seals

4 How is the pre load set, ie torque figures.

The instructions with the kit tell you a different torque rating for the steering them than the factory spec...if you need it prior to install, I can look it up, but it does tell you when you get the new bearings what it is.

5 Has anybody fabricated their own extraction/insertion tooling.

I have a friend who is a wrench for a dealer who had a pipe machined the exact size necessary to press out the races if thats what you are asking...most people to DIY just improvise.

Thanks gareva 1

I think I will be putting in an order for a set of these.

Had a good look at the workshop manual and I can see an afternoon in front of the lathe making a copy of the tooling required.

Once again thanks for your help

There are a lot of recommendations and disagreements for torque settings.
From what I have read and heard, I am going to be installing and setting mine later this month at the following values.
To seat the bearings and put everything in place. 36 ft-lbs. Move the fork part left/right several times while doing this.
Loosen
Set final torque at 24 ft-lbs.

I have an '06 w/navi and intend to grind down the top shelter brace enough so that the top bridge piece can be removed without having to take so much stuff off to adjust the steering bearings in the future. The earlier models are much easier to work on, the '06 and later models are a bit different/difficult.
