1800 won't start

Postby Marcomalo » Fri Mar 05, 2010 1:13 pm

I had the plastic off my 2001 1800A when I installed a new radio and cb. I cranked it up with no problem when I had the plastic off. I got everything back on it, motors spins fine, doesn't seem to be generating a spark. I pulled a plug (looked okay) and checked to see if there was a flooded chamber...seemed dry, but no spark obvious. Anybody got any ideas where to start on this problem?

Are you sure there is no spark, or is it there is no fuel?

A simple way to check is, if you have been cranking it for a bit, go smell the exhausts. If you smell raw fuel, then you've got gas going to the cylinders, but no spark.

If no gas smell, then your problem is with the fuel, not the spark.

Oh, and it should be said...make sure you haven't accidentally hit the kill switch. :)

+1 on the killswitch...

also, when you say you had the plastic off, I'm assuming that you only mean the shelter portion that is above the gas tank and not actually ALL of the plastic...you wouldn't have needed to pull all of the front fairing, but just in case you did, there is a bank angle sensor in the front fairing that if mounted incorrectly or disconnected will cause the bike not to start but still turn over.

if you dont have the ecm connectors completely plugged in, it may turn over but not start...I think I'd start with reseating those cables, and check to see if the Fault Indicator light on the dash blinks instead of just coming on for a few seconds and then turning off when you turn the key on...if it blinks, I'll put up a list of the trouble codes so you can see what the FI light is telling you.
