Could be the alternator driven gear assy. Commonly called the ADG. If it only "rattles" at low RPM but goes away when the revs go up, then that's probably it. Once you've heard it there is no mistaking the sound. You can confirm by removing the alternator and then checking the female drive spline of the ADG for any perceptible rotational slop or looseness. Engine has to come out to repair it.

very possible that its the ADG, could also be valve noise...not like out of adjustment, but like a shim/bucket thats worked itself loose...have you ever had the valve clearances checked?

I also had the rumble and clicking noise at idle and it went away when reved up on my 2003 gl1800 that has 122,000 miles on it. I replaced the alternator which had damage inside and it still made the noise. I pulled the engine and the gearcase cover (not an easy chore) and removed the Alternator driven gear assembly and it has slop in the rotation as well as about a 1/8 gap in the gear side that exposes the 4 springs inside. I sure hope this is what is causing the growling noise and clicking noise when the key is shut off and as the engine comes to a stop. Has anyone seen one of these off the bike and knows that it should not have the slop and gap?

Thanks

What you describe is exactly what a failed ADG looks like. There should be a stamped tin cap that holds in, and sits over the top of, 2 half moon retainers. When the retainers are allowed to escape the ADG halves move apart. You can see the springs inside, and the the inside dogs start to pound on each other at low RPM. Look for the retainers in the bottom of the rear case. If not there, they have probably moved into the crank case where in my opinion they are probably in the oil pickup screen and not worth going after.

jwit6 THANK YOU LOTS!!!!!!!!!!!! You have done me a real service!!!! I really appreciate the help!!!! You have described my alternator driven gear assembly exactly as it is. I did find the stamped tin L cap washer in the bottom of the case all bent out of shape, but no half moon retainers yet. I removed the retainer clip and found what I think is strange - three spring washers (the ones that are of a bent design to take up the slack. Is this normal - could these have put too much pressure on the other parts and caused the failure? What are those half moon retainers made of and how large are they?

jwit6 I went back out into the garage and put the retainer ring (called a circlip in the parts diagrams) back onto the shaft with the three spring washers inside and then the gap would not open up! I discovered that the shaft has two slots for the retainer ring (circlip). Now I am confused - Why two slots for the circlip and why three spring washers?

That is a snap ring not a circlip. My mind is going.

Get a copy of the service manual and study the relevant sections. Don't even consider putting the old ADG back in. Replace all the oil seals in the rear cover. You might also want to check the water pump, thermostat, drive shaft boot and rear shock while you have the engine out. Best detail I've seen on this failure is on gl1800riders.com.

Could this be the same problem on an 82 GL1100i?

I just picked this up two weeks ago in a non-running condition.

I re-built the carbs, changed/adjusted the timing belts, put new plugs in, changed all fluids and started it this morning.

I've got a loud Knocking sound coming from the engine at low RPM.
Around 2.5-3k it seems to dissapear and the engine sounds beautiful.

just wondering if this ADG thing is the same on the 1100.

GL1100's don't have an ADG.
