GL1800 Tail Light Assemblys Acorn Nuts would not break loose

Postby zainal » Sat Aug 25, 2012 9:48 am

I have a 2008 GL1800. I just purchased a set of Show Chrome replacement trunk and saddlebag moldings with LED lights. To install the trunk lights, I need to remove the tail light assemblys on the trunk and splice the wires into the running lights. Here lies the problem. The tail lights are held in with 3 acorn nuts threaded onto bolts that I presume are molded into the plastic of tail light. On the left side,3 just spins (feels like the whole bolt is spinning almost like the nut was put on too tight at the factory) On the right side, one nut came off and 2 are spinning. I have tried backwards pressure with vice grips and pulling while turning - no luck. I have tried a socket mounted into a drill a hit it with high speed to see if the nut would break loose from the bolt - no luck. ANY THOUGHTS??

Thanks!

Is there movement enough to slide a thin piece of wire behind the holding nut. If so slide the wire aroung and the pull to one side - hopefully locking the bolts into position. There should not be too much pressure needed to undo the nut. Once off you can always superglue the bolts etc.

Sounds like the anchor in the plastic has come loose and is spinning. You might try applying heat to the nut, to try to get it to melt the plastic it's seated, then let it cool and try again. If that doesn't work, heat it more, and just pull it out of the plastic altogether. You'll obviously have to repair that once you get it off.

After reading this thread, I went out and tried mine. One side came loose just fine and the other side all three are "stuck"

I don't have any reason to get into it now but keep us posted on what you find with the heat.

I thought of drilling the nut and then removing the stud from the light assembly and putting a nut insert that is kind of like a pop rivet into the plastic housing. I have some that are #10 screw size and I think that would work.

Had same problem. Tried pretty much everything with no luck. Put socet w/extension in cordless drill and spon nt while pulling out on tail light housing until it meted it way out. I did ruin the the lens assy, but I GOT IT OUT

Same thing happened to my 2007. I used a impact wrench to remove them by starting and stoppine the air impact it worrked well. one took a bit more stopping and starting but I got them all off.
Then I drilled the plastic and through the steel bollt and inserted a steeel pin. then covered over with jb weld so the pin cannot fall out

Don't mess w/it any further. Take it to a dealer!
The metal mounting studs have spun and stripped the threads out in the mounting bosses on the back of the lamp housing.
This is an assembly problem caused by a combination of to high RPM's along w/the "stop" torque on the nut driver being set to high at the ASSEMBLY PLANT IN MARYSVILLE, OHIO. Instead of the driver stopping at the correct point(tight nut) it has continued to spin the nut once it bottomed and caused the mounting stud to spin, stripping out the housing
You do not have to deal w/this yourself, possibly damaging lamp and or the trunk.
You may have to ask for the factory rep to become involved, if the dealer gives you any grief.
Another Honda screw up they have not taken ownership of!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the least this should have been a service bulletin a long time ago!
Even out of warranty, this shoould be taken care of by Honda. It can be a very long time before one needs to remove a lamp and discovers this problem!
