Brake Light Stays on all the time

Postby local40 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 7:29 pm

Hey guys need some help. I have a 02 GL1800 and the brake lights stay on all the time and cruise does not work. I think cruise will not work as long as the brake relay is putting power to the lights. I am getting power all the time to the switch side of the relay. I have read a lot of guys having problems with no brake lights but none with constant brake lights. Anyone have any suggestions?
Any ideals would be greatly appeciated!

I would start with the easy stuff first. Check the brake lever on the handle bar. I have heard of the switch there sticking. Also check the foot brake switch and make sure it is not sticking on. Some electrical contact cleaner will unstick them. If that is not your problem then you will need to check the wiring for any issues.

Pull the connectors off of the brake switch (start with the front brake lever, it's the easiest one to get to) and see if it fixes it. If so, the problem is a failed brake switch.

FRONT
• The upper (small) terminals are the brake light switch terminals.
Disconnect the front brake switch connectors and check for continuity between the switch terminals.
There should be continuity with the front brake lever squeezed and no continuity with the lever released.

REAR
Remove the top shelter.
There should be continuity with the rear brake pedal depressed and no continuity with the pedal released.
Disconnect the rear brake light switch 3P white connector and check for continuity between the switch side connector terminals.

Thanks for the help. It was the rear brake switch. Just my luck $51 bucks.
Again Thanks!

I just received my 2003 GL1800 Trike. Cruise control didn't work. I didn't realize that the brake lights were on all the time  After reading this thread and checked the brake switches, the lower brake relay switch had loosened and fell down. Pushing it back up did the trick and retighten screws. Thanks for the heads up :P
