Is my GL 1800 possessed ????

Postby TheBushman » Sun Dec 02, 2012 6:34 am

Problem with the starter on my GL 1800 -2008 only around 30000 kms on the dial. Cleaned the starter button to no avail but it seems that if I just lean the bike a couple of degrees to the left, then It starts without fail!! Shall I call an exhausist!????
Anyone ever had this problem??
With thanks.

Don't know about the 1800 but I had a 1500 that the Bank Angle Sensor went out and it would kill the bike and prevent it from starting when I hit a big bump. Perhaps you need to check that. It's a place to start.

Thanks for your help mate!!
The bank sensor cuts the starter or ignition. In my case whe3n I lean the bike a few degrees it starts. So I don't think the bank sensor has any connection to it. Could it be a bad contact in the brushes of the starter??

Silly question, but -- are you using 10W40 oil in the bike? This has been known to prevent the sprague clutch in the starter from engaging. A tell tale sign would be the starter spinning without engaging. If this does not happen, then this IS NOT the problem. Just a thought.

The bank angle sensor will keep the bike from starting. It will do nothing, just as if your bike is in gear and you don't have the clutch lever compressed.

Thanks fellows for all the suggestions and William who obviously has not followed his own advice and discovered some obscure gizmos and secret gadgets the GL 1800 possessed.
I found the answer!!!!
Nothing to do with the bank angle sensor!! Oil grade or type. Connectors or switches!! I hope this saves a few engines.
All to do with oil level.
The starter will activate if oild level is correct, if the level is bellow the safe level it will automatically cut off. My level was down after a long trip to the center of Australia and a huge heat wave we just had.
So if I leaned my bike a couple of degrees the starter would connect and the bike could start. If the bike stayed dead vertical one could press the starter switch as much as one would to no avail!! So first thing: Check your oil level!! Thank you all!!

That's a heck of place to be running out of oil.
