Vibration

Postby kartsmg » Sun Dec 02, 2012 9:37 am

I have a 2003 Gold Wing that has 36,000 miles on it. I bought it at 26,000 miles. Smooth as silk till about 32,000 miles then a vibration started in the gear train. I have heard varied ideas about what the problem is. Honda dealer said there is nothing wrong with it but I feel he just doesn't wanna own it. Oil analysis says definitely high iron level in the oil. I was told also that the problem is the alternator drive gear by a shop in Florida. I'd love to go to Florida this time of year but only for a vacation. If I can avoid bringing my bike down there to get it fixed, that would be great. Anybody got any ideas? Vibration is constant. At about 50 mph in 5th gear it's the worst. ???????????

Possible alternator bearings going bad but that is early. Check by holding a long screwdriver against the alternator in each area of the bearings , while doing that hold the other end against your ear. A good bearing will hve a smooth hum, a bad bearing will have a loud growl. Of course you do this with the engine idleing. You can use this same idea to pinpoint the noise if that is not the area it is coming from.

Does the vibe get worse with increased road speed or rpm or neither.

The vibration is all the time. Moving or stopped. it just gets a little worse when moving.

that is, it is not a propulsion system
invert the motor vibrations are!
Use regular medical stethoscope and locate the place of vibration
You can flirt ordinary hammer handle to your ear and listen to where it is loud!
