alternator replacement

]I was consulting with someone about my goldwing and they told me that the engine has to be removed to replaced on the gl1800. i know where it is located and have looked at it but is it true that you have to remove the engine?

To remove the alternator, no...that job can be done with the engine on...in fact, to remove the engine, you should remove the alternator first, so that sorta shoots a hole in what you were told.

If you pull the shelter and the gas tank, it will be much easier.

What your friends were talking about is the GL1200's had alternator problems and you needed to remove the engine to change them out. Very expensive and something to watch out for when buying a classic 84-87
