trouble shifting to first gear

Postby Troy » Thu Mar 14, 2013 7:55 pm

I have a 2002 gl1800 Goldwing, having trouble shifting to 1st gear. it's like gear pedal is all the way down. is there a spring or something in there that may be broken? there is no grinding. also bike wants to move forward slowly with clutch engaged. could it be the clutch or what ?

hello troy and welcome to GWD. check the fluid it the resevour on the left handlebar. if its low you need to add some brake fluid and if its dark brown you need to flush the system

Your best bet is to flush the system with new oil, you might have air in the line. One more thing is if you change the hand grips to bigger ones, the lever might not go all the way. Check the adjustment on the lever, 1 to 5 maybe this will help.

Do you have stock footpegs? Some owners fit running boards and that can cause issues going down the gearbox (most noticeably when getting into first). As suggested, I would also look at replacing the hydraulic fluid in the clutch system, if the fluid is getting old, or has air in the system, the clutch will not fully disengage, causing issues similar to those that you mentioned.

Easiest to check is the gear shift linkage to make sure it is not binding. Lube it if it is. After lubing the external shift linkage, I would pull the front engine cover off and check the springs on the shifter pawl.
