The engine needs to be running.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

As stated, the engine has to be running. The starter motor takes a lot of current when reverse is operating and Honda where worried the battery might be too flat after reversing to start the engine, so reverse will only operate when the engine is running.

The temp gauge will stay in the middle almost all the time. I have ridden in temps around 110 on a ride between Phoenix an LA on both
back roads and Hiway and the gauge barely moved .
Only once in over 150,000 miles did I have an issue with the coolant temp. That was when I did Pikes Peak and was stuck behind a car that
stayed at about 15mph most of the way up the hill. I had about 550 lb load between my passenger and myself and the air temp was in the
60s at about 12,000 ft. I had to stop because the bike was getting to the over heat mark. I have climbed Mt Evans which is a little bit
higher a couple of times in warmer weather with the same load and had no temp problems so it wasn't the climb or altitude.
The Achilles heal for the gl1800 is to ride between 15 and 20 mph because the fans blow air forward to keep it off the rides.
At about 15mph the speed of fans match the speed of the bike and no air flows.
