clutch or throwout bearing

Postby ljd » Sat Jun 15, 2013 7:27 pm

Hi all,
Had a nice ride today but a clutch noise that I've heard now and then, became very noisy today. When I let the clutch lever out in neutral I hear a grinding sound, I had a fellow rider and friend listen to it today and he thought it sounded like a throwout bearing.
When I got home I was going to listen to it with my stethoscope but it was quite then, of course. Has anyone else had this issue?

Thanks for any help,
ljd

I've read where a lot of 1500's have the same noise(some have had it for quite a while)with no ill effects.I'm not a 100% sure, but I believe it's the brg behind the clutch basket.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

I am pretty sure that brg=bearing
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

Yes it goes away with the lever pulled in and it doesn't always make the noise when the lever is out.

Has anyone else experienced/fixed this issue? My 02 with 60k just started doing this also. Seems to have started in the colder weather, but worse when the bike warms up.

Personally I wouldn't be all that concerned. My 1500 had it for the whole 100 k that I put on it(never got any worse)and because I could hear it on the 1500 I can now notice it on my 1800 as well.I'm hard of hearing, but I know it's there. There are a ton of threads on this noise on different forums and a lot of both the 15 and 1800 Wings have this noise to varying degrees with no ill effects. It's a brg on the shaft behind the clutch. If you contacted GoldwingGreg on the GL1800Riders.com he could probably tell you exactly which one it is.He's repaired a lot of 1800 tranny's for shift issues,so he's seen the inside of lot of these.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am concerned because it just started. Purred like a kitten up until last week! If it is the afomentioned bearing, will it not get worse and eventually grind to a halt?
I will try goldwing greg also if I can. It's about time to get it civered for winter here so I will probably re-visit next spring.

The biggest fear I have is taking it to the shop. I am not very mechanically inclined and I seem to always get the mechanics that tell me "yep, you need a whole new car/bike/mower/etc.......

I can fix your network though ;-)

Thanks again

Well if you're serious about trying to fix it you'll have to pull the motor and split the cases.Big job to say the least.
If I'da known it would last this long,I'da taken better care of it.

Thats my dilemma. If it is "nothing to worry about" I would rather try to tune it out! I can only imagine the cost from the mechanic......

Are there any other symptoms or tests I could look for or do?
