MIL 25 CODE Right Knock Sensor

Postby rlwfarrier » Wed Sep 04, 2013 9:56 am

My 2001 GL1800. The FI light comes on indicating a problem with the right Knock Sensor. When this first started the bike continued to run fine, but now when the light comes on the bike runs rough. It will cut off at an idle. (I have replaced the right knock sensor and the problem continues). I can switch the bike off while riding (losing the code) and witch it back on and the bike will run fine until shortly after the FI code comes up again and this only takes about 30 seconds. Any suggestions about where to look for the problem. Any help will be very much appreciated as I have had it at one dealer with no success. Their final conclusion was I needed an entire new wiring harness and at that point I told them to stop work and I picked up the bike.

As I understand things, you have just 2 possibilities....
Either there is a intermittent connection from the sensor to the ECM or the ECM is bad...
I do not have a schematic but the color coded wires on the sensor should lead you to the wiring to test between the ECM and the sensor to eliminate the harness....
However, personally I believe that because it takes a bit of time to act up,it won't be the wiring harness itself.
It's more likely the end connector has a loose crimp connection or a bad ECM,Not the wire in the harness...
I did find a intermittent connector once by gently pulling on each wire that entered the plug connector. One wire simply pulled right out..it didn't have a good crimp when built....A bit of delicate surgery and a soldering iron fixed it...

Thank you very much. I will check that out as soon as I have time to work on the bike again. I have a shop manual with the wiring colors so that should not be a problem. Thanks again for your prompt response and have a great day.

I also did a Google search...Seems your not the only one...
Searched.....2001 GL1800 MIL 25 CODE Right Knock Sensor....
This is what it showed.....

http://gl1800riders.com/forums/showthre ... 472-Mil-25

And even on this site....viewtopic.php?f=7&t=742

Look close at the wiring for poor connections first...seems to be a common find.
