smell hot rubber after ride of 10 miles or more.

Postby lilred85 » Wed Sep 18, 2013 11:00 am

I can smell hot rubber when I stop after a ride of 10 miles or so. There is no tire rub. My temp guage is running a needle's width warmer than normal. I had to add some coolant to the bike but the smell is still there. What could be giving off the smell?

My 88 has a rubber boot on each side.Around the shifter area...and there's some rubber trim in that area.
Perhaps a piece is loose and in contact with the exhaust header.????

How are your brakes.??? can you roll the bike easily after applying and releasing both levers.?

Get a young sniffer after the 10 mile ride...see if they can locate where it's the strongest smell.

Have you checked your tire pressure.??

lilred,

I ride a 2012 and have smelled that same faint burning rubber smell at times....I noticed a drain tube/hose hanging down very close to the rear tire and figured out it was rubbing the tires sidewall and was most likely causing the smell. Moved the tube and the smell has dissappeared.

Not sure what your mileage is on your bike but I would get a mirror and flash light and look under the rear of the engine between the reservoir and the clutch housing. If you see a bunch of crusty crap on it your water pump is leaking and it is probably getting on the converter.
