Max Tire Inflation?

Postby Northstream » Thu Sep 26, 2013 6:13 pm

I run my tires on my 2010 at 43 and 52 after reading all the posts about short tire life span. Now my local crowd says 48 and 56, how far can we push this and what might happen?

I think there are all too high . How's it ride ? How's it corner ? 56 psi is like what 15 psi over recommended. Your like 35 % over. Here on our roads your would bounce all over and have a sore @**.. Sally

Yeah, I also think 56 is a tad high. Even 48 is probably beyond manufacturers recommendation for max pressure. I don't think you could blow a tire even if you were to hit a pot hole with that much air in the tire. I accidentally pumped (hand pump on the road, with a malfunctioned gauge on it) a rear tire up over 80 pounds, and it did not blow, so maybe you won't have any problems. I rode about 25 miles on the tire like that, and that was after I had a belt separation on that tire. I thought it was going flat, so pumped it back up. Who knows. I run 43 and 45 in mine. The extra pressure after mild cupping on the front tire did eliminate the problem and I got over 16K miles out of that set of tires, so I am running that pressure right from the get go in this new set.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

I really do not notice any detrimental ride quality, preloading settings affect my ride but not tire over inflation. course I'm not dragging my pegs either, yet ;)

It's all about tire wear. But at this high pressures don't the center of the tire wear out faster ? I try to get even wear across the whole surface of the tire ??

Auto tires for sure, I have never heard anyone connect the issues for bikes. Cars do not lean over and run on the side of the tire .

I would;t be going above the max pressure stamped on the tire by the manufacturer. What kind of tire is it?

I would think that over inflating the tyre to extreme pressures would also reduce the amount of rubber in contact with the road which could affect grip during braking and cornering.

i try to run the recommened pressure of the tire manufactuer. over inflation can be as dangerous as underinflation. i tried over inflating my tire like that one time, i thought it made it harder to handle. if you do put more in i wouldnt do but 3 or 4 pounds. you can go to the tire manfactures web site, they usually have question and answers page. 8-)
