Clicking noise in my helmets after mic splitter with Zumo 55

Postby lorenedopp » Sat May 01, 2010 9:55 am

I added an edsets mic splitter to work with my Zumo 550 and I now have a clicking noise in my helmets.

I hav tried almost everything and need some suggestions.

I have the 2006 Premium Sound Base Model

Things I have added:
Trunk Light
Fog Lights
Volt Meter
Auxiliary 12 Volt Plug in Left Pocket
Goldwing High Brake light
Mic Mutes
Edsets 2
Passenger Mic Mute Button
MP3 Player that hooks up to CD Changer control mounted in trunk
Zumo 550 with XM Radio Antenna
This is hooked up through the Auxillary connector in Left Pocket)

Here are the answers to questions that some have asked me to help narrow it down.

• Do you have the noise with the intercom off? No, when the I-COM swith is off, the noise goes away
• Do you have the noise with the AUX off? Yes the noise is still there no matter if the AUX, FM1, FM2, WB,CD, or AM is choosen.
• Do you have the noise through the speakers, or just the headset? It seems to be just in the headset, not the speakers. But with the engine running it is really hard to hear.

• What other aftermarket items are installed? Answered above
• Is the noise only present when the engine is running? Yes
• If you disconnect the GPS from the AUX input, is the noise still there? Yes, it is, but Ill describe a strange phenomina in a little bit.

• Have you recently changed your spark plugs? If so, what brand were installed? The plugs were change about 1500 miles ago by the dealer. I dont know what plugs they put in

Here are some other observations:

1. If I take out the Zumo 550 from the cradle, the noise goes away

2. If I unplug the mic splitter form the Zumo 550 cradel mic input, the noise goes away

3. If I Turn off the Zumo 550, the noise goes away

4. If I turn on or off the fog lights, the noise is still there

5. If I turn off the cruise control, the noise is still there

And now for where I think I am getting closer to the problem

6. With the Zumo 550 in mount and the aux plug disconnected to the aux out in the mount, the noise is still there and.....

If I unplug the aux input connection in the glove box, the noise is still there and actually gets louder.

With the aux plug out of the aux output in the Zumo 550 mount, I took a wire and touched the female aux out recepticle and touched a ground screw on the bike, the noise went away!!

So I am thinking it has to do with making sure the Zumo mount and plugs are grounded properely. I am not sure how else to ground the mount and zumo 550?

I am thinking that there is something being created with the ground loop that isnt secure enough. I have read that I could purchase a ground loop isolator and wonder if this would help?

Now for more strange things, When I went back and made sure all the connections were secure, the noise is still there but significantly softer...almost to the point I dont hear it.

So I am really thinking it is a grounding issue. Would adding a ground loop isolator help?

Anyhow, I am sorry this is so long. If you would not mind, you could call me on my cell at 847-652-6865 if it is easier to talk. My regular email is lorendoppelt@comcast.net too.

I sincerely appreciate your help on this.

I never received a good answer on this. The best consensus is that I need a better ground connection. This seemed more involved than I wanted to tackle so I essentially haven't been able to fix this.

The clicking isnt that loud, but it would be nice to eliminate it. If you find anything out, please let me know too.
