Time frame to change air filter on gl 1800

Postby comanche » Sat May 01, 2010 9:58 am

The Honda GL 1800 manual says to change the air filter every 12,000 miles. Does any one do this this often? Of course, the dealership says this is necessary, but how often in normal dry riding do you change the air filter?A

I just bought my wing (a 2003 model) with 14,000 miles on it and immediately changed the air filter. Have to say it didn't look like it needed changing!! But for the peace of mind I was happy to do it, it also gave me a chance to see what actually lives under all that plastic.. Couldn't believe how bloody awkward it was to change the air filter!!

Here is the photo of the air filter taken out of my GL 1800 at 16,107 miles. Not too dirty is it?

I change mine between 16 and 24k miles, just depends---never looked like it was so dirty it needed a change.

I was 1,200 miles from home when my radiator fan rubbed a hole in my left radiator. Once I found a dealer that would fix it, I told him to change the air filter since he had it torn down. The bike had 18,000 miles on it. He brought the old filter out, and it was very dirty, and the left side had been eaten away by an unknown critter. Glad I chanced it.. I put in a K&N permanent filter and plan on checking it in 25,000 miles.

Mitch, when did that happen to you? My dealer has been replacing the fan shrouds for that very issue under some type of known honda defect/recall...apparently the shroud was made a little warped from the factory and it causes that issue...there is a service bulletin for it from what I understand, and a new replacement part number.

In March I was on my way to my daughter's in Madisonville, LA when I noticed the leak. I tried several dealers in LA. with no luck. One kept my bike for 3 days and kept telling me they would get to it each day until I found out all their mechanics were "busy" putting together new watercraft. I took the wing to Brookhaven Honda in Mississippi and they fixed it. I have not seen or heard of any service bulletin or recall on it though. If you find any more info on it, let me know.
Thanks/John
