how to change the light bulbs behind suspension controls

Postby windyhillfarm » Sat Oct 19, 2013 7:38 pm

I know that someone will think that this a crazy question but I have a knack of breaking things when I don't ask for the tricks first. How do you get to the light bulbs that light up the suspension buttons?

Well I have changed headlight myself before. I pull out the glove box if you will call it that on the left then reach in. There is a rubber boot that covers everything than a spring clip squeeze it and open it it's on like a hing after you disconnect wires out comes the bulb. You have to do this by feel the bulb is an H7 I buy them at Wal mart the bulb will unplug from the honda base. Small hands will be good.I actully change the left low beam two months ago in less than 5 mins. No I'm not good got lucky.Right side same way remove glove box. I think low beams are easier than high beams.. Hope this helps.. Sally  Just keep your cool and walk away if needed. My first high beam took forever ended up getting wife to reconnect wires I had enough..

He is not asking about the headlamp bulbs........ He is asking about the lights that are down on the left side where the suspension control is.

Well I can tell you how you get to that unit itself, from the GL1800 service manual (two different procedures depending on the model you have):

LEFT PANEL SWITCH (Except VIIIA and IIICM)
Remove the left fairing pocket.
Remove the 14P (gray) connector from the stay and disconnect it.
Remove the setting bolt (5 x 19 mm).
Release the three tabs and remove the switch assembly from the top shelter.
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

RIGHT UPPER PANEL SWITCH (VIIIA and IIICM models)
Remove the right fairing molding (page 3-17).
Remove the two setting bolts (5 x 12 mm) and the switch assembly from the top shelter.
Release the connector boot from the clamp and disconnect the 10P (gray) connector to remove the switch assembly.
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.

Once you've got it out, I am going to expect that you will need to disassemble it to find out what type of bulbs it requires.

I just read another thread on this and the general consensus was the suspension controls are not illuminated. A parts diagram had led someone to believe the lights existed. Now I haven't checked directly since I read it but I know mine have never lit up... should would be nice though. I hope I'm wrong, but its too late for this ol'guy to go and actually pull the panel. Mind you my switch pods are also not backlit like the newer models.
