1800 turn signal auto cancel

Postby jvanloo3 » Tue Apr 01, 2014 8:25 pm

My 2003 goldwings auto cancel doesn't work any more. After I turn, I have to turn it off manually. Do I need another unit or is there something I can do to fix it?

To my knowledge, the auto cancle should work when any one of 3 things happen.
Your speed increases above 25 mph
The handle bars are moved from center to either side and back
The internal timer (aprox.60 seconds)has expired.
I also believe that without the cancler installed, the flashers will not work at all.
Have there been any modifications to the wiring that operate the turn signals?
trailer lights,add on lighting?
If the bike is OEM,I suspect the cancler may be bad.
As always, there are specific tests at the plug that should be done to verify the cancler is getting all the signals and voltages required for it to operate.
Example...if the speed pulse is missing, the cancler "thinks"your not moving and will stay on.
The speed pulse may come from the cruise module,I really don't know.
Just check the signals first before you just buy a new part.

OK...see if this helps...you can get more details from the manual....It appears that the canceler is attached into the bottom of the steering tube...It's removed by a few bolts that hold the angle sensor up...The canceler is inside the center steering tube and the wires exit out the top..You would need to pull a bit of slack to get it all the way out...
Otherwise, the test points are under the plastic...

The canceller is located inside the steering shaft. Look at the bottom of the steering stem (directly above the front fender). You should be able to see a small metal plate (#3) mounted to the bottom of the shaft. There should be a rectangular tab from the unit protruding through the metal plate. When you turn the handlebars this rotates the tab and sends the cancel signal.

I installed a couple of extra lights under the headlights and used the nice screw for a ground. Wrong!!
It was the mounting screw for the auto cancel and it had come off the rubber tip of it. Pushed it back on after seeing this post and all is well.
Thanks
