2002 Loud whistling noise - low and center.

Postby Stenger » Thu Apr 10, 2014 8:55 pm

2002 GL1800 98,000 miles. Have a loud whistle noise from very low under the driver’s seat, behind the engine. Sounds like a vacuum leek, bearing or brakes squeak. It started months ago every time after the engine was turned off and lasted for only about a second. It’s now starts after a mile or two when the engine drops below 1,200 rpm. I changed the oil looking for metallic flakes, sprayed ether in from both sides and no change in running. No starting issues, no difference while in reverse, stopped, rolling or in gear. At this point the only time it stops is over 1,200 rpm. Consulted a reputable local cycle shop and they too would like to know what I find out. Any thought of what to check next?

Could it be coming from the exhaust as opposed to a vacuum leak? A second perhaps might be your fuel cap.

I would seriously take a look at your coolant level and the recovery bottle (bottom side aft of the seat). I could foresee built up pressure whistling ion and out the tube that reaches into the bottle. The lower the coolant level the hotter the cooling system and the more steam/gas expelled that the recovery tank should catch; unless it has a been damaged and is empty. If there is nothing in the tank then the system can't suck in coolant as it needs and that little hose could be your whistling mystery. The recover tank has no protection and has been known to take hits from rocks and such (belly pans stop that issue).

PastoT, You hit it right on the head. After adding a small amount of anti-freeze to the recovery bottle the noise stopped other than after one hard stop. I've ridden several thousand miles to confirm the results and you were correct. Thank you!

Thanks for getting back here with the solution. It is another one to put into my memory banks of noises the GL1800 may produce annoyingly.
