Radio won't turn off

Postby hemm1998 » Wed Apr 30, 2014 5:32 am

Has anyone else have this happen to them?? I have a 2001 gl1800 with a J&M mp3 player. Last weekend I was riding home and listening to the mp3 player and noticed the display for my radio/cd was blank. I couldn't adjust the volume, change to the radio or turn it off. When I got home and turned the bike off the radio continued to play. I pulled the flash drive form the player cord and it stopped but it started playing again as soon as I plugged it back in. I had to pull the radio and accessory fuses to finally get it to turn off. Anyone have an idea of what caused this? I have a 8gb flash drive and I think that might be the culprit, not real sure though. I ordered a 4gb drive for it but haven't got it yet to try it out. The MP3 player comes from the factory with a 4gb drive.

Thanks in advance
Doug

When you put the fuses back in, did it start back up again?

Yep, the radio started working again. I haven't tried the mp3 player since then though.

Pretty sure all the MP3 changer devices can do this, occasionally. Low battery voltage is one issue but more often bumping the ADL SEL/RDM button on our radio will do it every time (hopefully you only do it once!). Mine has done it 3 times... 1. ADL SEL/RDM 2. Changing the USB drive while powered up and 3. Running all my electronics and powered up my fog lights with the highbeams on at idle! Low voltage this last time. Generally the only way to reset the radio with these connected is shut down the bike, pull fuses 20 &21 and the connector from the MP3 changer device. It takes a couple minutes for the radio to reset, if you have to reprogram your radio channels you succeeded. Of course just try just turning everything off for a minute first. Also I've had partial lockups if I flip through the tracks too quick - it frustrates the player, but you can still get back to FM.

Thanks for the info PastoT!! I did hit the ADL SEL/RDM button before it happened!! I will try my best not to do it again. :)

Most only do that once, its not something that's in the instructions but you sure remember it, with a little panic! :o

Same thing happened to me too on my 2003 GL1800. What I did was disconnect the battery and then reconnected it 10 minutes later. I probably didn't have to wait the 10 minutes but that was the information I received about it. It took care of the problem.

Yup, happened to me twice now and both times I was playing with some buttons i.e. RDM, SEL etc....just to see what would happen. I pulled out the appropriate fuse to cut power to the system and put it back in after a few seconds and problem solved.
Don't understand what caused it exactly but I just don't touch those particular buttons anymore.

I ride a Goldwing but I love all bikes.
