2002 GL1800 install a voltmeter?

Postby vernesam » Tue May 27, 2014 12:07 pm

I am trying to install a voltmeter on a 2002 Gl1800 - the instructions said there was supposed to be a connection right under the right side glove box. I could not find the connection. Is there another way to wire it up?

Thanks verne

I don't have a 1800 but my 1500 fuse Block has a set of accessory terminals.
It may not represent the battery voltage to the tenth of a volt but close enough to tell if it quits charging.

Post pictures of it when your done.Where you mounted the meter and where you hooked it up.
Include the voltage shown with just the key on and then with it running.
Mine shows 12.1 with the key on(not running) and from 13.5 to 14.0 depending on rpm.
If it goes to the 12 volt range on the highway,I know I have a problem.I also know what fuse to pull to kill the headlight in case I need a longer run time.
I also found out that the ignition starts to fail if the meter shows less than 10.2 volts.however it will still kinda run down to about 9 volts.Very badly.
I did this on purpose.Just to find out.

I have an 02 and there is an auxiliary power point available below and slighty behind the right forward speaker, in the same portion of the harness that bears the ambient temp sensor. It is for heated grips so it will handle like 5 amps. I'm running GPS, XM Radio, a power port and my voltage meter. I mounted my meter behind right speaker grill; its a red display and large enough to see the numbers through the grill.

The power supply in the instructions I thihnk was within the rubber boot low and inboard from the right hand pocket lock. I had to dig for it to install a SpeedoHealer. Its not easy to get to unless the shelter is loosened.
