Postby freeatlast789 » Thu Jul 10, 2014 6:26 pm

I am replacing the air filter for the first time and reviewing the factory maintenance manuals. I am looking ofr any shortcuts to replacing the air filter, the manuals indicate dissembling a large amount of plastic and more, there has got to be a better way. H E L P !

Sorry bout this. There is not a better way, or really any other way. Changing the air filter on these bikes is an onnerous task. What kind of mileage do you have on your bike? I have yet to see a dirty air filter come out of a GL1800, and I have seen some with 50K miles when changed. They call for a change much sooner than that, but if fuel mileage has not decreased, ya know what I'm sayin'?

Yeah, when it comes to this ridiculous procedure, there are no shortcuts. It's really a failure on the part of Honda engineering for this one.

Thanks yo all that replied. We just stopped dismantling the fairing and now going back together. The bike has 12000 miles and the maintenance schedule calls for a ne air filter. I am performing all maintenance to the bike so it's ready for my Sturgis run. You saved me a lot of work, thanks again.

The only shortcut I know is to use a snake scope to look at it and if there are no mice, just change every 40k or so. I change mine at that interval and never had any ill affects such as decrease in gas mileage or response issues. Even when I change at 40 I think it could go longer. Never really dirty. I just turned 93,000
