Whine is driving me CRAZY!

Postby JerriEric » Sat Aug 09, 2014 3:03 pm

I have a '06 which I bought new. I do not wear a helmet. The whine has never existed except for the last 10k or so. I just turned 95k. The whine is so annoying that I am actually considering buying an HD. I don't go on long trips anymore since the wife is not too healthy. I did go to Sturgis by myself last year and came home in 2 days for a total of 2,276 miles. Not sure I could do that on an HD. Whine seems to be really noticable below 55 mph. Most of my riding is 60 or below. I know people say get over it but I hate it. If I turn my head about 45 degrees in either direction the whine is almost unnoticable. Is it the alternator?

This whine. Will it change pitch if you change rpm and not speed. ?
Let's find out where the whine comes from.
Run it till its bad.Pull in the clutch and drop the rpm 2k or so.
What happens to the noise.?
If it's still there it's rolling noise...roll the bike a bit left then right.Does it change.?
Scalloped tires.?Needing new wheel bearings?
Did you add anything to the bike.? Lights..,deer whistle.?
How bout a headlight protector or a vent not sealed shut(windshield).
The possible cause of the noise goes on and on.

Now if the whine changes with RPM and not speed,we investigate the alternator and timing belts/idler pulleys.
