How does the CB radio work on a GL1800 2002 model

Postby The Easy Rider » Mon Sep 01, 2014 1:01 pm

I have purchased my GL1800 without an owners manual. It is a 2002 American import to the UK. It comes with a JC215H CB radio which makes a noise but I can't hear anyone. I have a couple of questions.

Can anyone briefly explain how the radio works I can't find any microphone to speak into?
Also will an American CB work in the UK and pick up UK CBers?
Are there any tests i can do to make sure the unit is working correctly?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Easy Rider.

You need a microphone, and that can be had as a hand held unit, or as a headset (ear speakers and a boom microphone). There is a better than even chance that your American CB will work in the UK as they use the same frequency band. Both are 27 MHz if I remember correctly. You should be able to hear your CB through your stereo speakers, but there is no way to speak on it without a microphone of one sort or the other. I will PM you on the issue of a service manual.
It ain't about the destination - it's all about the journey

The US and UK systems of CB radios use different frequencies and are not compatible with one another. You will not be able to hear other UK users on your US CB, and they would not be able to hear you.

Don't rule out using the CB in the UK!! Before CB became legal in the UK, there where a lot of us (and truck drivers) using American CB's in the UK. When CB became legal it was full of kids and many people stayed on the old illegal US frequencies and there are still a lot of truckers on that frequency!! If you are using the CB on your bike, it is probably to ask for help or directions so having truckers on the same frequency is quite useful.. Otherwise you can remove the CB and sell it on eBay to some Americans for several hundred dollars!! They are $800 new with the antenna and then fitting is extra!! I do NOT know of anyone selling a UK legal CB for the goldwing.

Gary,

Thanks for that I'll try the CB on my way home from work, I'm going down the motorway so will have more chance of picking up truckers.

I am amased they are $800 new, but then nothing is cheap on a wing. :(

Regards

Chris
