wineing noise coming from right side of 03

Postby sgrider » Thu Jun 03, 2010 7:52 pm

Just purchased my first 1800 that I hauled from In. to Oh. I had been riding a 86 Aspen. and had found out it had its own little querks. When I got the bike home and started it I seem to think there is a wineing noise coming from right side of motor (if on bike) near the front of motor. Not knowing if this is normal or there is a problem with the bike I had just purchased. It seems to be less noisey after it runs for a while but still there. Does the 1800 have certain problems that I should know, this is a great bike and runs like no other I have owned. What a great bike!!!!!

Does it get better/worse depending on what gear you are in? Some people complain of a bad whine in 4th gear...some bikes do it, some don't...although that is usually coming from the alternator area of the bike on the left side of the engine. How many miles and what maintenance has been done on your new to you 03?

Just under 30,000 miles and not sure of maintence on bike. It is the loudest when bike is just started and it does no matter what gear or even N. If the bike had a Ford power steering unit on it, that is what it sounds like. It could be left side of bike, can't tell. Might have to bite the bullet and take it in to Honda. I did a lot of the work on my 1200 Honda myself and not sure if this 1800 will be as easy to work on, I have not purchase a manual for her yet. I saw on EBAY there is a manual on a computer disk, anyone know if its any good?

Have you done an oil change on it yet? I think I'd start there just because...

at 32k you're supposed to have a valve clearance check anyway if you're following the maintenance schedule---if its coming from the front right, thats the area you'd be looking at anyway, so you may be able to schedule the valve check if you don't feel comfortable doing it, and then let them know about the noise when you bring the bike in for the check.

ref; The manual and CD on ebay I bought one for my 1500. It is a good start for step by step troubleshooting. But you need to have a computer in your shop area or a laptop so you have the information right there while you work.
