GL1800 ('03) strong gasoline smell

Postby Paulcf » Mon Nov 03, 2014 2:50 pm

Hi techies! I have a 2003 GL1800 (40k miles) and whenever I park it (engine hot of course) there is a very strong smell of gasoline. So strong in fact I have to open my garage door for a few hours to let it ventilate out. My first suspicion is the gas cap, so I will get one soon to replace. But when I do the close up "smell test", it doesn't seem to be emitting any gas odor! I have even smelled gas when riding which is scary to me.

I will be replacing my air filter this spring (did it already on my buddy's GL1800 so I am familiar with the day long process) so I am wondering what I should be examining/replacing to remediate this awful gas smell. I researched this and it appears to be a problem on 1500's but nothing of significance for the 1800's hence my posting.

Any suggestions? I would PREFER to have suggestions from other 1800 owners WHO HAVE EXPERIENCED this problem and fixed it. Thanks.

I have an 02 that has done this occasionally. I've never found a leak and it is inconsistent and rare so chasing down the trouble is difficult. I suspect though it happens on hot days, after refueling and then parking. The 3 times its happened to me it was a hot day and I'd been riding a 100 or so miles and refueled shortly before returning home to park in the garage, I've smelled gas twice that I remember when sitting at light. I suspect I'm overfilling the tank and it maybe purged into the canister and just too much to contain the vapors from the tank. I haven't had the occasion to see if the canister is perhaps cracked (I'm assuming its plastic), honestly never even seen the thing but it does make sense. I've really topped of the tank a few times when on long runs and perhaps it happens then but the gas level in the tank drops before I actually stop long enough to notice anything. It smells different than what I'd call gas but then there are additives in most and perhaps that is throwing off my nose; smells more like a paint product or paint thinner to me. Try to not top the tank off and then park, it may help. Of course the checking the evap canister is already on the table and sounds like a good next step for each of us.
