2005 GL 1800 Cruise Control won't engage...

Postby BigDaddyWing » Tue Jun 08, 2010 11:18 am

At highway speed I turn the cruise control "on" but it will not engage when I press the "set" button. It worked trouble free up until about 3 months ago and hoped that there would be a "shade tree mechanic" fix that I can do myself before I take it in to my dealer.

Any help would be appreciated,

Well, I fixed it myself after doing some basic electrical troubleshooting under my shade tree... Found a bad "normally closed" micro-switch on the clutch lever. When "opened" it cuts out the cruise control just like pulling the hand brake or pressing the foot brake. Same type switch, just gets used more than the brakes do.

Easy replacement as there is one, small phillips screw holding it in and a small "PNP" (plug & play) connector to un-plug. Replacement is just the reverse and there you have it... Simple and it cost me nothing as my Honda Dealer gave me the switch..!

I didn't realise but the cruise control only works when you are in Overdrive, so I was going to suggest checking the OD light comes on.. Seems you have fixed it..

I fixed my cruise control issue by taking a small piece of plastic that I cutout of an old DVD case. I super glued it to the little depressor on the clutch lever which filled the gap between it and the Cruise Control Clutch Cutoff switch dimple. The clutch never fully depressed the dimple and now it does.

For some that encounter this problem it may be that a bushing in lever has worn to the point that micro switch won't make proper connection. Dealer replaced bushing on my 03 GW & all is good.
